About Port Townsend

The small town of Port Townsend is filled with art galleries, antique stores, bookshops, and restaurants.

As you walk around town, you’ll notice numerous well-preserved Victorian buildings. The city was called the “City of Dreams” because it was hoped that it would become the largest port on the western side of the United States. However, economic activity ultimately shifted to the Seattle ports instead. Instead of becoming a bustling city, Port Townsend remained a small coastal town. Port Townsend was rated as one of the Top 10 Best Small Towns in America by Fodor’s (article linked here)

Port Townsend is located just south of Fort Worden Historical State Park, which is definitely worth visiting. In addition to the main fort, there are military bunkers, beaches, and forest trails. (We wrote all about our visit to Fort Worden here!)

(Booking information for Tides Inn & Suites is linked here.)

Tides Inn & Suites (Best hotels in Port Townsend)

During our last visit to Port Townsend, we stayed at the Tides Inn & Suites. We cannot recommend this hotel enough! The hotel is located right on the water, with excellent views of the Puget Sound.

We stayed in a Premium King Deluxe room. We had a small balcony, a beautiful breakfast nook, and a large jacuzzi tub with views of the water.

We were able to easily access the beach, and we enjoyed going for a beach walk in the morning.

One morning, while we sitting on our balcony, we saw a family of deer head down to the water. It was just magical! It was such a peaceful spot to enjoy the wildlife views, as well as watching kayakers and boats pass by.

In terms of location, this hotel was only a 10-minute walk to downtown Port Townsend. We felt like it was the perfect location because we could easily access the town, but we also were able to stay on a waterfront property.

If you’re looking for a waterfront hotel in Port Townsend, we definitely recommend the Tides Inn & Suites.

Below are some photos of our stay at the Tides Inn & Suites!

Palace Hotel

1004 Water St, Port Townsend, WA 98368

(Booking information for the Palace Hotel is linked here.)

The Palace Hotel in Port Townsend

The historic Palace Hotel was built in 1889 and is located in the heart of downtown Port Townsend. If you want to be in the center of town, this is the place to stay!

The Palace Hotel has 26 rooms, 19 of which are decorated in the Victorian style. The remaining 7 rooms have a modern loft-style. The lofted studios are large and spacious. You can view photos of each the rooms located on their website

Because the hotel is located in a historic building, please note that there is no elevator, no ground floor rooms, and no air conditioning.

While we were in Port Townsend, we passed by the Palace Hotel on numerous occasions. It looked like such a warm and inviting hotel. I especially loved the baskets of fresh flowers that were hanging outside their door.

The Belmont

925 Water St, Port Townsend, WA 98368

(Booking information for the The Belmont is linked here.)

Another hotel located in downtown Port Townsend is The Belmont. This waterfront hotel is located within a historic building that was first constructed in 1889.

The hotel was renovated in 2018 and has been updated with modern amenities.

The rooms have Victorian furnishings and exposed brick walls. In 2020, The Belmont received the Excellent on Main Award for Brick and Mortar Rehabilitation.

The rooms have no televisions, which was intentionally set-up to encourage guests to disconnect and enjoy the views.

Ravenscroft Inn

533 Quincy St, Port Townsend, WA 98368

(Booking information for the The Ravenscroft Inn is linked here.)

The Ravenscroft Inn is a quaint bed and breakfast that welcomes guests that are 12 years old and older. There are a total of 8 guest rooms.

The inn is located in one of the upper neighborhoods of Port Townsend, which is about a 5 to 10 minute walk from the downtown area. The inn is located within the Charleston Single House, which is a colonial-style home with sweeping front porches. The inn is just steps away from the Rothschild House Museum

If you stay at the Ravenscroft Inn, you’ll have a delicious breakfast in the morning, an afternoon snack, and a 24-hour beverage station.

Manresa Castle

651 Cleveland St, Port Townsend, WA 98368

(Booking information for the Manresa Castle is linked here.)

Manresa Castle is located a bit further from downtown Port Townsend, but it’s not every day you can stay in a castle!

The castle was built in 1892 as a personal home for a wealthy businessman. (The owner, Charles Eisenbeis, was Port Townsend’s first mayor.) The mansions consisted of 30 rooms.

In 1927, Jesuit priests purchased the property and named it Manresa Hall.

In 1968, the property was purchased to make the Manresa Castle hotel. The rooms have a Victorian style, in keeping with its early traditions.

An advantage of staying at Manresa Castle is that there are dining options on-site. (For example, check out the Green Room!)

The Swan Hotel

222 Monroe St, Port Townsend, WA 98368

(Booking information for the Swan Hotel is linked here.)

During our last visit to Port Townsend, we ordered a soaking experience at Soak on the Sound. While we were walking to our appointment, we walked past the Swan Hotel. I immediately stopped to look around because it was such a cute hotel.

The hotel is ideally located in the downtown area, and you can easily walk to the beach. The Swan Hotel has 13 rooms, 4 cottages, and one penthouse suite.

Port Townsend Inn

2020 Washington St, Port Townsend, WA 98368

(Booking information for the Port Townsend Inn is linked here.)

The Port Townsend Inn is located a little south of the downtown area. You can easily walk to downtown Port Townsend in about 10 minutes.

The motel has an indoor pool and hot tub, which is perfect for rainy coastal days. (Their website indicated that it was temporarily closed, so please be sure to check their website for current updates.)

Bishop Hotel

714 Washington St, Port Townsend, WA 98368

(Booking information for the Bishop Hotel is linked here.)

If you’re looking for a boutique hotel, the Bishop Hotel is a great option. The hotel features 16 fireplace suites, and it’s also dog-friendly.

The Bishop Hotel features luxury towels and bath products, as well as beautiful gardens. In 2021, the Bishop Block Bottle Shop was added for wine tastings and dining.

The hotel’s building was originally built in 1890.

Fort Worden State Park

200 Battery Way, Port Townsend, WA 98368

(Booking information for Officers Row at Fort Worden State Park is linked here.)

Fort Worden State Park Officers Row

Another option is to stay in Fort Worden State Park, which is less than two miles north of downtown Port Townsend.

There are several lodging options at the park, including cottages from Officers Row, two campgrounds, a small castle, renovated barracks, and even the option to stay in the Point Wilson lighthouse

We had the opportunity of staying in one of the cottages from Officers Row, and it was a really cool experience to see inside the homes. The Officers Row cottages are perfect for larger families, because there are numerous bedrooms and lots of space to spread out.

What to Pack for a Trip to Port Townsend

  • Binoculars: You’ll want to be able to see all of the details as you explore the beaches and mountains of the Olympic Peninsula.
  • Power Bank: We like this cell phone charger because the cord is embedded. (One less thing to lose!) A power bank will let you charge your phone when you’re out exploring. You don’t want to run out of battery, because you’ll want to take lots of photos!
  • Water Bottle: Stay hydrated while you’re out exploring. We like this one because it’s an insulated bottle.
  • Hiking Boots: When out on the trails, you’ll want to make sure you have proper foot protection and ankle support. I’ve been using the Columbia brand for years and have really liked my boots!
  • First Aid Kit: Anytime you’re out in the wilderness, make sure that you travel with a first aid kit.
  • Day Pack: Store all of your extra layers and snacks in a comfortable day pack.
